Dear Professor Martin

*STFC ERNEST RUTHERFORD FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS 2012/13*

**

_Ernest Rutherford Fellowship Application Limits_

STFC sets a limit on the number of Fellowship applications that each
department is permitted to submit and these limits are agreed annually
by the Education, Training and Careers Committee. For the current round
the Committee has recommended that the overall maximum number of
applications should remain at the current level to ensure that only
genuinely competitive candidates are put forward and that the peer
review process can focus on careful assessment of those candidates. The
Committee also recommended that no appeals should be allowed.

_Your Department’s Limit_

*University of Strathclyde*

*Department of Physics*

**

*The maximum number of Ernest Rutherford Fellowship applications that
may be submitted by your department is 1.*

**

This limit is derived from the number of staff within the department as
input in 2011 to the STFC research studentship algorithm. In keeping
with the recommendation of the Education, Training and Careers
Committee, no appeals for applications above the limit calculated by
this method will be allowed. To avoid disadvantaging candidates who
might otherwise have applied through another department, you should
remain within these limits. You may also wish to consider the timing of
internal selection processes in case of excellent late-emerging candidates.

Any departments who exceed their limit will be required to withdraw the
excess application(s). Departments will be notified by STFC if they
exceed their limit and will need to select the application(s) to
withdraw within one week of this notification. If no selection is made
by the department, the excess application(s) will be selected by STFC
based on the chronological order in which they were received.

Further guidance on departmental applications limits is available from
www.stfc.ac.uk/Funding+and+Grants/509.aspx
<http://www.stfc.ac.uk/Funding+and+Grants/509.aspx>.

_Returners to Research_

STFC encourages returners to research and the limit will not apply to
any applications from candidates who are intending to return to research
from a career break (normally of at least two years). Ernest Rutherford
Fellowship applications from returners may be submitted in excess of the
departmental limit given above. Returner applications will be judged
solely on the applicant’s track record prior to their career break. The
Fellowships Panel will look to the track record for evidence of the
qualities of excellence and potential expected of a fellowship holder.

_Call for Proposals_

The closing date for the 2011/12 fellowships round will be Thursday 27
September 2012 and the application form is now available via the Je-S
system.

The guidance for completing proposals is available from
www.stfc.ac.uk/Funding+and+Grants/509.aspx
<http://www.stfc.ac.uk/Funding+and+Grants/509.aspx>.

If you have any queries about application limits or the Ernest
Rutherford Fellowship scheme more generally please contact
fellowships at stfc.ac.uk <mailto:fellowships at stfc.ac.uk>.

Yours sincerely

Clare Heseltine

Secretary to Education, Training and Careers Committee
