Supporting the national effort

[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/d2/b63c96e4c6d7fefcd8aeb3.png]Data scientists at the University of Strathclyde helped NHS Lanarkshire to predict and manage hospital bed capacity for COVID-19 patients during the most critical phase of the current pandemic.

The University was commissioned by the Health Board in early March to develop a model to help it plan and manage demand for critical care and general ward beds across the three main Lanarkshire hospitals.

A team from the Department of Management Science, led by Dr Robert Van Der Meer, developed an integrated spreadsheet and discrete event simulation model, yielding week-to-week predictions of the number of critical care and other hospital beds required as the early wave of COVID-19 patients was rapidly building up.

Carers' Week 2020<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/11brjp7axsbxru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=1&p=57228653&t=31139365>
Sessions aimed at colleagues who are carers

[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/27/3df7868c2d8e1558b4c764.jpg]As a socially progressive employer, we recognise the contribution our staff and students who are carers make to help their families and local communities, workplaces and society, and we want to ensure they get the support they need.

Carers' Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

Because of the unique circumstances we find ourselves in this year, we have opted to run events throughout June, and not over a single week as we normally do. We hope this will give our carer community better access to events and support on offer.

Many people are taking on more caring responsibilities for their relatives and friends who are disabled, ill or older and who need support. Many are experiencing isolation and loneliness as a result of the lockdown.

The events are aimed at helping our carers access support and information and also provide advice on keeping well themselves.

A list of the events running in June are listed below. Further events may also be added in the coming weeks.

[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/12/f82c4902d202cbb2becf11.jpg]During this time of lockdown, it’s been more important than ever that we look after our physical and mental wellbeing and find new ways to keep ourselves motivated and moving throughout the day.

This year’s Step Count Challenge, the nationwide team challenge organised by Scottish Walking charity Paths for All which concluded at the end of May, proved to be a great success in encouraging teams from across the University to stay connected and keep moving.

There were 14 teams taking part this year and, courtesy of Strathclyde Sport and the Sustainability team, there were prizes for the winning team and the highest scoring individual.

Find out who the winners were and how the challenge helped colleagues stay motivated during lockdown.

Improving online resources

The Research and Knowledge Exchange (RKES) department at Strathclyde is well known for being approachable but we want to make things easier for staff who use our services.

We are the team who help get funding bids through, whether that’s for a major research grant, knowledge exchange or to support postgraduate researchers.

We help mitigate risk and negotiate terms with external organisations through contracts, we help engage society in the research you are doing through events and we help you get access to data on PURE.

A major overhaul of our online resources is underway to help improve our services and we need your help.

We are looking for staff who use RKES (or hope to do so in the future) to tell us what they want on our new sites.

Can you take 10 minutes or so to answer our customer survey?

Tell us what you think <https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/fo3ztr7zzrjxru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=2&p=57228653&t=31139368>

Eight Strathclyde students have been crowned Innovation Champions after achieving the highest level of the Scottish Innovative Students Award<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/s0sdwxmz3brxru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=57228653&t=31139333> (SISA) programme.

Adda Ingemann Petersen, Adzfar Aziz, Cameron Moggach, Connor O'Neill, Lewis Henderson, Oluwadamilare Opeyemi Aluko, Ryan Lenagh and Thomas Drescher were among the 59 students across Scotland who received the SISA Level 3 award for the 2019-20 academic year.

The awards recognise that businesses of the future need employees and entrepreneurs to have innovation and enterprise skills such as creativity, problem solving and the ability to communicate well. Taking part in SISA is designed to enhance a student’s ability to stand out in the graduate recruitment market, and develop skills that will open up new career opportunities.

Celebrating success

An alumna of the University of Strathclyde has won a prize awarded by the UK’s professional body for librarians.

Elizabeth Carney, who gained a Masters in Information and Library Studies (ILS) from Strathclyde in 2019, is the joint winner of the 2020 CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) Student Prize.

The prize is awarded for exceptional achievement in the field of library and information science studies, either in academic achievement, professional potential or support and development of other students.

As well as the £300 CILIP prize, Elizabeth has won two Strathclyde awards. She received the department of Computer and Information Science’s (CIS) ILS prize on her graduation and is to be awarded Strathclyde’s CILIPS student medal later this year. In addition, she won the CILIP Library & Information Research Group’s Student Award in 2020.

Adjusting its portfolio to lockdown life

CLL has a varied and arguably eclectic range of learning opportunities.

Where else could you learn (to name a small selection) principles of safety and risk management, who your ancestors are, stand-up comedy, Spanish, counselling skills, Roman history or study an access course to enter University – all under one actual or virtual roof?

Then came COVID-19. About 50% of our business is offering short face-to-face classes to adults, particularly those aged 50+, where we have carved a unique niche. Not for the foreseeable, it would seem.

So how have we addressed this incredible change in working?
